Nella tipografia per il Web i font slab serif pongono alcuni interessanti quesiti di classificazione e alcune problematiche a livello di design. Secondo la classificazione corrente, infatti, i font slab serif hanno delle caratteristiche che li fanno assomigliare più a dei font sans-serif che non a dei font serif. A livello di design, invece, non è chiaro quale sia il loro effettivo impatto emotivo sul design. Infatti data la loro natura, è difficile stabilire quale sia il messaggio veicolato dall'uso di questi font. Vediamo in dettaglio queste due problematiche.
Classificazione

Slab serif or Egyptian typefaces usually have little if any contrast between thick and thin lines. Serifs tend to be as thick as the vertical lines themselves and usually have no bracket. Slab serif fonts have a bold, rectangular appearance and sometimes have fixed widths, meaning that all characters occupy the same amount of horizontal space (as in a typewriter).
They are sometimes described as sans-serif fonts with serifs because the underlying character shapes are often similar to sans-serif typefaces, with less variation between thin and thick shapes on the character. (A subcategory of slab serif is the Clarendon typefaces, which do have small but significant brackets, and structures more similar to serifed typefaces.) Slab serif typefaces date to around 1800.
Examples of slab serif typefaces include Clarendon, Rockwell and Courier.

Clarendon
Clarendon typefaces, unlike other slab serifs, actually have some bracketing and some contrast in size in the actual serif. Examples include Clarendon and Egyptienne.
Neo-grotesque
The most common slab serif typefaces, Neo-grotesque have no bracketing and evenly weighted stems and serifs. The letterforms are similar to neo-grotesque or realist sans-serif fonts. Examples include Rockwell and Memphis.

Italienne
In the Italienne model, the serifs are even heavier than the stems, forging a dramatic, attention-drawing effect. Some Italienne slab serifs, such as Playbill, have a characteristic Western appearance, likely as a result of their frequent use in western-era posters.

Typewriter
Typewriter slab serif typefaces are named for their use in strike-on typewriting. These faces originated in monospaced format with fixed-width, meaning that every character takes up exactly the same amount of horizontal space. This feature is necessitated by the nature of the typewriter apparatus. Examples include Courier and Courier New (both Neo-grotesque model) and Prestige Elite (Clarendon model).
Impatto emotivo
Data la loro natura ibrida, questo tipo di font aggiunge nuovi valori semantici ai tradizionali concetti di eleganza, tradizione e stile veicolati dai font serif. La sensazione che essi comunicano è quella di una tradizione che si fonde con la modernità, ossia di un eleganza priva di quella staticità della carta stampata (ricordiamo che l'uso principale dei font serif è legato al mondo della stampa) e aperta al dinamismo.
Molti siti di tipo magazine (come Smashing Magazine) usano questi font proprio per la loro caratteristica principale di essere l'anello di congiunzione tra il passato ed il presente.
